Prostate Cancer

As gay men our anus is very important.  It should be protected and looked after so we can enjoy the pleasures it offers.  This is why it is important to know the “ins and outs” of our anus.  Let’s start off with prostate cancer.

One of the most common types of cancer among ALL men is prostate cancer.  It usually occurs in men older than 50.  African American men are more likely than white men to develop prostate cancer and are more than twice as likely to die from it.  A person can be at additional risk if they have had one or more close relatives with prostate cancer.

Your doctor should screen you for prostate cancer every year starting when you are 50.  If you are at high risk for prostate cancer (if you are African American or have a father or brother who has prostate cancer at a young age) you should begin having these tests at 45.

For more information on prostate cancer in gay men contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2346.
